Book Review: "Queso!!!"

Queso!!

This book was such an amazing choice!! I never thought that there were this many recipes for Queso! This makes me so happy, I tried a couple so far and they were great! I cannot wait to try the rest of them. One of the things I really loved about this is how much of a variety they put into it. If you love queso then you need this book because it's like you could have it every night and not get sick of it.

Book Review: Hag-Seed by Margret Atwood

Book Review

Hag-Seed
by: Margret Atwood

I saw this book on the website and was so excited to read it. I fell in love with Handmadens tale so I needed to read this as soon as I saw it. Then I also saw that it is a retelling of The Tempest. I loved this. I thought it could be hard to read but it wasn't - she wrote it so well it flowed. I was not a fan of the cover but every thing between the covers were wonderful! This goes on the list of amazing stories written by such an amazing author!

Book Review: Writing my wrongs

Writing my Wrongs

by: Shaka Senghor

When I first logged onto the site and saw this book as an option I wondered what it was all about. I read the description and seriously thought that this book would be something out of my comfort zone. I was excited to see it at my door step and started reading. I really enjoyed this book and loved seeing things from the other side of things. I have always enjoyed reading/watching anything to do with people that have gone to jail and seen things in a different light and this is exactly that. I loved how real things got in this. It made me think of my life and some of my decisions differently.

Book Review: The Roanoke Girls!

Book Review:

The Roanoke Girls
by: Amy Engel

Summery:
"After her mother's suicide, fifteen year-old Lane Roanoke came to live with her grandparents and fireball cousin, Allegra, on their vast estate in rural Kansas. Lane knew little of her mother's mysterious family, but she quickly embraced life as one of the rich and beautiful Roanoke girls. But when she discovered the dark truth at the heart of the family, she ran…fast and far away.

Eleven years later, Lane is adrift in Los Angeles when her grandfather calls to tell her Allegra has gone missing. Did she run too? Or something worse? Unable to resist his pleas, Lane returns to help search, and to ease her guilt at having left Allegra behind. Her homecoming may mean a second chance with the boyfriend whose heart she broke that long ago summer. But it also means facing the devastating secret that made her flee, one she may not be strong enough to run from again.

As it weaves between Lane’s first Roanoke summer and her return, The Roanoke Girls shocks and tantalizes, twisting its way through revelation after mesmerizing revelation, exploring the secrets families keep and the fierce and terrible love that both binds them together and rips them apart."

Review:
As soon as I saw I could get this book from my book reviewing site I needed to get it. I know it was going to be amazing and I was 100% right! I thought it could have moved a little faster in the beginning but as soon as you keep going it pulls you in. I never wanted to put the book down. While reading some of the characters feelings were some of the ones I have felt and made me more into the book. I liked that it felt like I was right there with them trying to figure out what to do because those feelings were all too familiar. I really enjoyed finding out all the family secrets (no I will not spoil anything) - it made things so much more intense. I loved this book so much and am actually thinking of rereading it. When I normally never do that. I do have to say some things were kind of predictable but every once in a while the author really got me! If you like edge of your seat books then this is totally for you. Just get through the beginning.

The Goodreads Tag

If you are not familiar with Goodreads then let me tell you about it. It is a site that is all about books, you can put in what your reading, any updates, have lists of what your reading or what you want to read, giveaways and so many other things. If you are a huge reader and love booktube and your not on Goodreads then you are missing out!

1) What was the last book you marked as 'Read'?
"The Unofficial Guide to Disney Cruise Line" - I loved this!! I just got off of a Disney Cruise and I needed some more Disney! Can't wait until the 2017 version is out!

2) What are you currently reading?
"Children of Eden" by Joey Graceffa. It is a fiction novel about a different world. I am excited about this but I don't want to say much because I will be doing a review!

3) What is the last book you marked "to-read"?
"Curse of the Boggin" by D.J. MacHale. This is a book about ghosts and horror things within a library. It is right up my ally!!

Yes I do, I am sometimes lax on them just because there is no 1/2 stars but I always put some sort of star rating on it.

6) Did you do a 2016 reading challenge? How did you do?
Yes I did. I try to do one every year, the amount of books always differs but I always need to be consistently reading! This year I was doing really good in the start but then moving and jobs got in the way so I am not doing great now but I am trying to finish it and going to do better tomorrow.

7) Do you have a wishlist?
I am not sure if I do on Goodreads but I do in my head haha

Up in Space

Spaceman

I liked this book because it was such a different book than I normally read. I had a hard time getting through it because like I said its not something I normally read but some of the information was really cool to read. When I first got this book I thought that I would hate it but to see another side of something that I know nothing about was pretty cool.  I never knew that I would know this much about this. My fiance loves everything to do with space so of course she also read this and thought it was one of the best bio books that she has read.

Book Review: A Court of Mist & Fury

Book Review:

A Court of Mist & Fury
by : Sarah J Maas

Copyright - 2016

Genre - Fantasy

Pages - 624

Price - $18.99

ISBN - 9781619634466

SynopsisFeyre survived Amarantha's clutches to return to the Spring Court—but at a steep cost. Though she now has the powers of the High Fae, her heart remains human, and it can't forget the terrible deeds she performed to save Tamlin's people. Nor has Feyre forgotten her bargain with Rhysand, High Lord of the feared Night Court. As Feyre navigates its dark web of politics, passion, and dazzling power, a greater evil looms—and she might be key to stopping it. But only if she can harness her harrowing gifts, heal her fractured soul, and decide how she wishes to shape her future—and the future of a world cleaved in two. With more than a million copies sold of her beloved Throne of Glass series, Sarah J. Maas's masterful storytelling brings this second book in her seductive and action-packed series to new heights.

Cover: I really liked the cover because it just made the whole reading experience that much better. The woman on the front of the book really resembles Feyre so it really shows me that the designer cared about how it looked. Which makes me give it 5 out of 5 stars for the cover.

Point of view: First person

Intended audience: It is a Young Adult (YA) book so it is meant for teenagers but some of the scenes are a little too adult-ish.

Characters: Feyre: She is the main character from the first book but she has changed so much. In the first book I was a little iffy with her. Now in the second book she is way more confident so I like her so much better!
Rhysand: I would have to say I have a new favorite character with Rhysand. He is such a well built character in so many ways. He is so powerful but such a good person. I wish there was more of him.

Plot: The plot in this book stood out so much more than the first in the series. I loved this book so much more. It seemed to be completely different writing style. One of the biggest things I loved about this plot was how great at describing the world and what was going on. I could really see it while I was reading.

My Opinion: Of course I read the first book but it was such a struggle to get through. I was not even sure if I would want to read this one. But I am so happy I did because it was totally worth it. The only thing I didn't really stand by was the sex scenes. I did not like those just because they are not my type of story. I totally wish it was not as short as it was even though the book was massive! One thing I wish she included was a whole chapter about/with Rhysand. That would have made it 100% better. I loved this book and am looking forward to the next one.

Debut Authors Bash 2016

Debut Authors Bash 2016

Hello Everyone! I am so thankful for being able to be part of the Debut Authors Bash again this year! Please make sure you check out the other pages to see all of these wonderful authors that are part of this!
I was lucky enough to interview Tricia Clasen; the author of the (soon to be) 'The Haunted House Project'!

Tricia Clasen:

Make sure you check out her newest book 'The Haunted House Project' on September 6th, 2016! I know I will be getting it the day it comes out!!

Here is an interview with Tricia Clasen about her upcoming book:

 1) Have you always wanted to be a writer? Why?

I have always loved escaping into a good story whether it was movies, television, or my beloved books.  I think because I loved reading other people’s stories, I naturally dreamed of writing my own.  I can remember being certain that I was going to be an author, and putting it at the top of every goal list I ever made.  Still, I never actually wrote anything until about five years ago.

2) How did you come up with the concept for 'The Haunted House Project'?

As parents, I think we all ponder the "what ifs".  That was really the spark for this.  I originally thought I was going to be writing about Paige, the older sister, and had envisioned a young adult story with her finding the way to bind her family together, but I kept coming back to Andie and what she would do get everyone's attention.  Middle-graders can be both so innocent and so savvy at the same time which really opened up the idea of haunting her dad and sister.

I suppose this is based on my fear as a mother that no matter what might happen to me, I’d want my family to have happy and productive lives.

3) Did anything from the book actually come from your real life?

Nothing in the story is exactly “real” but certainly, there are characterizations and situations that are reflective of my life and the people it.  I think I’ll let them figure it out!

4) Please give us some insight to your main character Andie - What (in your eyes) does Andie do that is so special to you?

The average middle-schooler is worried about homework and maybe their Snapchat streak. Andie has been dealing with heavy issues--death, addiction, and money troubles.  She struggles to manage middle-school friend politics as well.  She’s afraid and she’s lonely, but instead of wallowing, she continues to try new avenues, which is what leads her to the haunted house project.  I love that she never gives up hope, never stops trying.  Even if she doesn’t always make the best decisions, her heart is definitely in the right place.

5) Do you believe in the paranormal? Any stories?

It’s probably terrible that I don’t, right?  I’m sure I had my moments as a kid when I would hear strange sounds in the house, but I’m generally not a believer.

6) If there was someone going through the same thing as Andie, What would you say to them if you could?

First off, I’d want to hug the heck out of that kid.  Mostly, I’d want him or her focus on three H’s:  “help, hope, and happier”.  This is tough stuff, and it’s not likely any kid can get through these kinds of issues alone.  Andie doesn’t.  She could definitely have found additional adults to help her as well.  I believe there is always hope in every situation.  Time doesn’t heal, and it doesn’t end pain, and when you’re dealing with major issues and depression, you may think you’ll never be happy again. I think it’s okay to honor that and to have hope that you will be happier than you are in that moment.

7) I am extremely excited to read this book so I have to know- is this going to be a series or a stand alone?

Yay!  I’m glad it seems interesting to you.  It’s a stand alone.

8) While writing this book, are there any secrets, secret meanings or funny stories that happened? Wither to you or within the book?

I can’t think of anything specifically while writing the book, though I admit I had some fun searching for examples of paranormal activity on Reddit.

One sort of funny story that came later, though is that a picture showed up on my Facebook wall and my mouth dropped open because I swore he was Isaiah, Andie’s best friend.  It was a story about this kind of geeky kid on the Humans of New York page, everything about this kid screamed Isaiah, and I immediately sent the link to my agent and editor, and now I reference that picture for inspiration.

9) What is your favorite quote? Either from the book or in general or both?

From the book:  In a flashback, Andie asks her mom why she kept trying to sew even though she was horrible at it.  Her mom answers, ““I always ask myself what I’d regret more,” she told me, “wasting time trying or never trying at all. In the end, the answer’s always the same. It’s worth it to try.”

I think everything Andie does shows how much she internalized that message from her mom.

10) What is the main thing you would like the readers to come away with?

Besides those three H’s, I think this story highlights my views on the power of perception.  No one sees the whole picture of person or situation.  It creates miscommunication and allows us to ignore potentially important information about each other.  I’d like us all to take a little more time, be a little more observant, be a little more willing to acknowledge our faults.

Hope you guys enjoyed the interview and are going to look up the book! I cannot wait until it comes out! I will be doing a review of it as soon as it comes out!

Enjoy and keep reading!

Book Review: Mother, can you not? by Kate Siegel

Book Review:

Mother, Can you not?

by Kate Siegel

This was a really cute book and even made me think about my relationships! I love those types of books that I can get something out of it. I feel like they are extremely needed in todays world. I thought that the humor that was throughout the book made it seem like it was going so much faster than it really was. I was extremely excited to read it and still love it now that I am done. I think that if you have any problems with your mother - not that shes just a crazy Jewish mother, this book can really make you see a different side of things. The only reason I couldn't give it a 5 star rating is simply because of the cover. I normally cannot stand hard back books but I really do not like the hard covers that have like half of a cover. I understand why she did that but it doesn't impress me.

Stars: 4 1/2 out of 5!

Book Review: Armada by Ernest Cline

Book Review:

Armada
By Ernest Cline

Synopsis:   Zack Lightman has spent his life dreaming. Dreaming that the real world could be a little more like the countless science-fiction books, movies, and videogames he’s spent his life consuming. Dreaming that one day, some fantastic, world-altering event will shatter the monotony of his humdrum existence and whisk him off on some grand space-faring adventure.

Review: First thing I have to say is that this has become one of my new favorite books of all time! I read this one before his first book and fell in love. It seems like everything just works together. The writing style, plot, characters, setting and throwbacks! I feel like he really knew what he was talking about when most authors never really know what they are doing. I think I would have to say that the little bits of the past games really stole the book for me. I am a huge gamer so living within the game for the book made it even better for me! I loved it! If you like the 80's and any video games at all you should totally read this book! I know a lot of people didn't like this book because they read "Ready Player One" first but maybe it was just me but I thought this book was so much better but it could account to me reading this one first.

Stars: 5/5!!

Please leave your comments on what you thought on the book below! I will be updating my review and making it into the type of review I normally do!

Love you all!

But when Romany gypsies arrive in town, Sebastian discovers his world is not what it seems. There is an age-old feud between his family and the gypsies – and this isn’t the only secret his brother has been keeping from him. His life is not his own.  Author Interview:

Can you tell us about your book, GREY?
Absolutely! Grey is a YA fantasy, and it’s the first installment of “The Romany Outcasts Series.” It’s the story of eighteen-year-old Sebastian, who lives in a small town with his brother Hugo, a tattoo artist. One day, Sebastian wakes up feeling unusually sick, and he can’t figure out what’s going on. Then, strangers arrive in town, along with a mysterious girl Sebastian can’t seem to shake. Pulled into a world of Outcasts Gypsies with closely kept secrets, Sebastian discovers his life is not what it seems.

What was your inspiration behind writing Grey?
My favorite fairy tale has always been Beauty and the Beast, but I’m a softie for any story involving the theme of not judging a book by its cover. There are similar themes in Grey, which are set up at the beginning and flourish throughout the entirety of “The Romany Outcasts Series”.

I wanted to write a story with an underdog type character who doesn’t fit the mold of a traditional hero. Those are the people I was always drawn to in books, films, and television. I love sidekick characters and those that might sometimes appear unnoticed in the shadows of a larger-than-life hero or heroine. I love quirky and offbeat humor. And I just really wanted a story with a character that embodied all those things I loved.

Did you ever experience writer’s block?
Absolutely all the time! It feels a bit like failure, and it’s easy to get frustrated. I sometime try and write dialogue scenes to fight past it. If that doesn’t work, I leave the scene entirely and find something else to do – watch a good television show, read another book, go for a walk, or go off somewhere alone where I can talk out loud to myself and people not look at me like I’m crazy. Usually one of those things will eventually jar something loose in my brain.

Did any music inspire you while writing this book?

I love listening to music while I write. I’m a big fan of movie and television soundtracks, especially during action scenes or emotional moments. But I also like particular bands when I’m trying to get into the heads and atmosphere of my characters. For Grey, I listened to the following pieces of music and groups quite frequently:

The soundtrack from Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows
Playlists of Romanian folk music
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
Satellite
The Royal Wood
Coldplay
Playlists from the television show Being Human
To Be Juliet’s Secret

Do you have a favorite place to write?
I’ll really write anywhere, but one of my favorite places is a small room upstairs in my house that I’ve converted into an office. It’s basically a den of geekness, though. I’m surrounded by pirates, hobbits, various incarnations of the Doctor and his Tardis, pictures of former students, costumes and cosplays, theatrical swords, X-Men, 80’s cartoon cartoons…you get the idea. My husband often asks me how I can write with all that stuff around me, but it’s inspiration.

How are the main characters of Grey celebrating the holidays?
Sebastian will be hanging out with his brother Hugo at the tattoo shop, most likely eating cartons of Chinese food and watching cheesy Christmas movies. Josephine will be with her family, celebrating a very traditional Christmastime with lots and lots of food.

What did the main characters of Grey dress up as for Halloween?
Well, I think Josephine probably opted for something fairly low key, seeing that she wears so many elaborate costumes for her job. Possibly a character from a book. Sebastian…well, that’s actually a very interesting question. After you read Grey, I think you will definitely know the answer.

Favorite TV show?
Doctor Who

Cats or Dogs?
Dogs

Biggest Pet Peeve?
Bad theatre etiquette during a performance or show. (I’m a theatre director, what can I say?)

Holiday Traditions?
Spending Thanksgiving with friends in a cabin in the north Georgia mountains is one my favorite holiday traditions. For Christmas, I love my church’s Christmas Eve service, my family’s lasagna dinner afterwards, doing Christmas crackers around the table, and sitting in front of our tree with a cup of tea. Driving around looking at Christmas lights. Listening to my stepfather read the Christmas story from the Bible on Christmas morning while we sip hot cider. Oh, and I can’t forget the Doctor Who Christmas Special on television.

2015 Debut Author Bash - Day 2

Welcome back Everyone!!
Hope you all are enjoying your posts for the Author Bash!
Find some new authors or books and get to reading!

Lauren Gibaldi Mathur

Hello, I’m Lauren. I’m an author of young adult novels and public librarian. I’ve been, among other things, a magazine editor, high school English teacher, bookseller, and circus aerialist (seriously). I have a BA in Literature and Master’s in Library and Information Studies, both from Florida State University. I currently live in Orlando, Florida with my husband, daughter, and ever-expanding collection of books. (I mean, it comes with the professions, right?)
I love dinosaurs, pasta, musicals, and cheesy jokes.
I’m represented by Claire Anderson-Wheeler with Regal Literary.

The Night We Said Yes

Before Matt, Ella had a plan. Get over a no-good ex-boyfriend. Graduate from high school without any more distractions. Move away from Orlando, Florida, where she’s lived her entire life. But Matt—the cute, shy, bespectacled bass player who just moved to town—was never part of that plan. And neither was attending a party that was crashed by the cops just minutes after they arrived. Or spending an entire night saying “yes” to every crazy, fun thing they could think of. Then Matt abruptly left town, and he broke not only Ella’s heart but those of their best friends, too. So when he shows up a year later with a plan of his own—to relive the night that brought them together—Ella isn’t sure whether Matt’s worth a second chance. Or if re-creating the past can help them create a different future.  In alternating then and now chapters, debut author Lauren Gibaldi crafts a charming, romantic story of first loves, lifelong friendships, uncovered secrets, and, ultimately, finding out how to be brave.

1) What were you like in school? Where you good at English back then?
I was a drama girl in high school--I pretty much spent all my time in the drama room, or in the theatre. I loved it! I did like English class, too--I've always liked reading. I went on to major in English Literature.

2)  How did you come up with the idea for the book?
I love the idea that in one night, anything could happen. I kind of wanted to write about a really fun, amazing night where the characters felt unstoppable, and then revisit them a year later to see how that night changed them.

3) On your Goodreads page, many people compare your book to John Green's 'Paper Towns'; How do you feel about that?
As someone who loves "Paper Towns," I think it's a major compliment! I love John Green's books! That said, I think outside of both stories taking place in Orlando, they're quite different.

4) If 'The Night we Said Yes' is the so called "baby" of two other books, What would you say it's parents were?
I thought about this for a bit, and honestly have no idea! What do you think?
(Answer below in the comments)

5) The friendship between Meg and Ella is so amazing and honest - Did you take that friendship from one in your real life?
Thanks! I didn't base Meg and Ella off anyone, but I think their friendship is similar to several of my friends. I love that honest friendship--the one that's so deep and loyal that you if you do fight, you know it'll end in about five seconds because it's not worth it. I wanted that for the two of them. I wanted them to be undeniably honest and open with one another, even when it was hard. I wanted their friendship to be just as important as the relationship between Ella and Matt because, to me, friendships are just as important as relationships.

6) I would have to say that Ella was my favorite character because she was so relatable and down to earth. It seemed like we grew with her as we went through the book. Who is your favorite character and why?
Thank you so much! I have a weak spot for Ella, definitely. She's the most like me. But I have to say my favorite character is probably Jake, I think mostly because I feel like I have to take care of him. He needs someone like that! I just want to pop into his life every now and then and make sure he's okay. I also adore Meg. I'm very protective of her.

7) There was a conversation towards the end of the book that really made me rethink things about my life and how I am living now; While writing the book was there any point where you did the same thing?
That's very amazing to hear! I think the whole "saying yes" message of the book made me want to "say yes" to more things. Like publishing in general! It's scary, but worth it. So, I think, like Ella, I say yes to more things now, even if they're scary.

8) What is one secret about the book? Like was there something you almost wrote differently, or a routine you have while writing?
Hmmm. Barker's first name is Jeremy. I wrote the entire book as Jeremy, and then changed it to his last name. So when referring to him, I still call him Jeremy (or Jerm, for short).

9) What is your favorite book and why?
I'm both a librarian and writer, so it's impossible to choose a favorite! I'll go with the ones I've read the most: The Great Gatsby and The Perks of Being a Wallflower. They're both amazing and beautiful.

10) What is the one thing you hope people take from your book?

I want people to not be afraid to go for what they really want, despite it being hard or scary. I had people tell me I shouldn't make a career of reading and writing because there's nothing in it, but, hey, I'm a writer librarian. I wanted it, so I went for it. So go for it!
