2017 Debut Authors Bash!!

Welcome Readers to 2017's Debut Authors Bash!

I hope you have had a great month of reading so far! I am so excited to be part of this again this year!

Please make sure you go and check out everyone else's post and if you are doing any social medias include  the hashtag #17DABash!

I am so pleased to announce that I did an interview with Karen McManus - the author of "One of us is lying"! I have included some information about her, the interview and a giveaway! Make sure you get to all of it and if you have read the book I would love to hear your thoughts!

Author's Bio:

"As a kid I used to write books when I was supposed to be playing outside, and not much has changed. I'm a marketing and communications professional who also writes Young Adult contemporary and fantasy fiction in Cambridge, MA.
When not writing or working I love to travel, and along with my nine-year old son I've ridden horses in Colombia and bicycles through Paris. A member of SCBWI, I hold a bachelor’s degree in English from the College of the Holy Cross and a master’s degree in Journalism from Northeastern University. Which I have never, ever used professionally.
One of Us Is Lying is my debut novel, and I'm currently working on a second book with Delacorte Press that's scheduled to be published in 2018."
(from karenmcmanus.com)

Author's Interview:

1) First of all thank you so much for the interview! So, How long did it take you to write this book?

It took two months to write and two months to revise, so four months total.

2) Who are your favorite authors? Did they influence your writing style? What about your favorite book? What is it and did it influence this book?

Two of my favorite classic authors are Agatha Christie and Charles Dickens, and they definitely influence my style—Christie for her red herring-laden mysteries, and Dickens for the sprawling cast of characters he always creates. When it comes to contemporary young adult, I love Becky Albertalli’s witty, authentic dialogue, and Mindy McGinness’ unflinching take on dark themes. I could never pick a favorite book, but also I’m a big Suzanne Collins fan, and the Hunger Games series is what inspired me to start writing YA in the first place.

3) I saw you got your Bachelors in English, is writing books what you always wanted to do?

Yes, but it took me a long time to get here! I started writing stories in second grade, but by the time I was in college I’d given it up, because I found it too hard to finish a book. I thought I’d do something else with writing, like marketing or journalism. And in fact I’ve done business-related writing for a long time, but the urge to create stories never really went away.

4) When and how did you get your idea for this book?

I was driving to work one day and the song “Don’t You Forget About Me” came on the radio. It’s the theme to The Breakfast Club, and I started thinking about that movie and how it might be fun to write a modern, twisted take on it. The phrase “The Breakfast Club, with murder” popped into my head and stayed there. I started thinking how you could kill somebody in a classroom without anyone realizing you’d done it, and thought of a way. Then I wondered WHY you would do that, and the story started to take shape.

5) I think what pulled me in right at the beginning was how similar it was to Gossip Girl (which is my favorite tv show) - Did this show have anything to do with some of the ideas in the book?

It was an influence, along with The Breakfast Club and Pretty Little Liars. I’ve seen the book described as a mashup of all three, which I take as a compliment :)

6) Do you have a favorite character? Personality wise or favorite to write?

I love them all equally, but Nate was the most fun to write. His voice was clear as a bell from the beginning and his scenes always flowed. Addy’s character arc was my favorite and her storyline is close to my heart.

7) Was it hard going from character to character between chapters? Like having to go from one head space to the next?

It was! I made it easier on myself by creating a separate musical playlist for each character. I’d listen to that while writing their scenes, which helped me get into their heads.

8) Did you know how it was going to end when you started writing or did it come later?

I didn’t know at the very beginning. I had a few different ideas, and decided to get started by writing sample chapters and getting to know the characters. By the end of the second chapter I knew who these kids were, and who had done it.

9) What is something you edited out of the book? Or what is something extra about the book the readers do not know?

While I was drafting I asked my son Jack, who was nine at the time, if he wanted to name a police officer. He immediately said, “Officer Hank Budapest.” So I put that in. Once the book sold and started going through the editing process, I thought somebody might suggest I change it, because it’s a highly unusual name. But nobody ever did, and Officer Hank Budapest is now canon, which makes Jack extremely proud.

Thank you all for joining me for the 2017 Debut Author Bash!! I hope you all are inspired to pick up this book because it is simply amazing!

Book Review: My Rad Life

My Rad Life

I had heard about this book and I was excited. I got it and started writing as soon as I opened it. I think the biggest part of this was that they had a lot of amazing questions that truly made you think. There were some awesome quotes on the journal parts of the book but like I said I loved that they had so many questions. I love thinking about how I feel or what I think about some things. It think this type of thing is something everyone should do. I rate this 5 out of 5 stars so much!!

Book Review: Hag-Seed by Margret Atwood

Book Review

Hag-Seed
by: Margret Atwood

I saw this book on the website and was so excited to read it. I fell in love with Handmadens tale so I needed to read this as soon as I saw it. Then I also saw that it is a retelling of The Tempest. I loved this. I thought it could be hard to read but it wasn't - she wrote it so well it flowed. I was not a fan of the cover but every thing between the covers were wonderful! This goes on the list of amazing stories written by such an amazing author!

Book Review: 10 Things I can see from here

Book Review:

10 Things I can see from Here

by: Carrie Mac

I will have to say - I was not a huge fan of this book. So far almost all of the books I have gotten have been great but this one wasn't for me. I loved the color of the book as soon as I saw it but then I flipped it around and saw the cover. I do not like the shadow in back of the words. I think it looks stupid. I started reading it, thinking it was going to be cute and something I could relate to but it just seemed so childish to me. I didn't like any of the characters or the way the story went. I was hoping for a totally different ending. If you enjoyed the book then I am so happy for you but it was not my cup of tea.

The Goodreads Tag

The Goodreads Tag

If you are not familiar with Goodreads then let me tell you about it. It is a site that is all about books, you can put in what your reading, any updates, have lists of what your reading or what you want to read, giveaways and so many other things. If you are a huge reader and love booktube and your not on Goodreads then you are missing out!

1) What was the last book you marked as 'Read'?
"The Unofficial Guide to Disney Cruise Line" - I loved this!! I just got off of a Disney Cruise and I needed some more Disney! Can't wait until the 2017 version is out!

2) What are you currently reading?
"Children of Eden" by Joey Graceffa. It is a fiction novel about a different world. I am excited about this but I don't want to say much because I will be doing a review!

3) What is the last book you marked "to-read"?
"Curse of the Boggin" by D.J. MacHale. This is a book about ghosts and horror things within a library. It is right up my ally!!

4) What book do you plan to read next?
"Talking as fast as I can" by Lauren Graham. I am so excited to read this because I am a huge Gilmore Girls fan and want to see what she has to say.

5) Do you use the star rating system?
Yes I do, I am sometimes lax on them just because there is no 1/2 stars but I always put some sort of star rating on it.

6) Did you do a 2016 reading challenge? How did you do?
Yes I did. I try to do one every year, the amount of books always differs but I always need to be consistently reading! This year I was doing really good in the start but then moving and jobs got in the way so I am not doing great now but I am trying to finish it and going to do better tomorrow.

7) Do you have a wishlist?
I am not sure if I do on Goodreads but I do in my head haha

8) What book do you plan to buy next?
Probably something for Sarah for christmas, nothing for me. We do not have much money for me to buy books.

I would love if you guys wanted to comment your answers!! I love hearing from you guys! I hope you all are doing well. I know I have not been on here much and not doing 100% the best posts I can but I promise I will do so much better! Make sure you go check out my youtube channels!

Book Review: Mother, can you not? by Kate Siegel

Book Review:

Mother, Can you not?

by Kate Siegel

This was a really cute book and even made me think about my relationships! I love those types of books that I can get something out of it. I feel like they are extremely needed in todays world. I thought that the humor that was throughout the book made it seem like it was going so much faster than it really was. I was extremely excited to read it and still love it now that I am done. I think that if you have any problems with your mother - not that shes just a crazy Jewish mother, this book can really make you see a different side of things. The only reason I couldn't give it a 5 star rating is simply because of the cover. I normally cannot stand hard back books but I really do not like the hard covers that have like half of a cover. I understand why she did that but it doesn't impress me.

Stars: 4 1/2 out of 5!

Library Lovers Tag!

Hey guys - I did this tag over on my Youtube page so thought I would add my answers here!  Go check out my channel for the video! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=puCzlPYpPY8

Library Lovers Tag!

1) How often do you visit your local library?  - I go almost everyday!! Obviously it depends on how much gas we have or time to go anywhere but I go to the one closest to me whenever I can and the main library downtown about every 2 or 3 weeks! Its kind of sad when the library staff knows you by name because your there that much!

2) Do you check out more books than you can read or only get a few? - Even though I know I cannot read them all in time I totally get more than I can read but; I do have a system so that they are never late but I can keep them in my pile. :)

3) How old were you when you got your first library card? - I believe I was in middle school. I am not sure of exactly what age but I know I was young!

4) Do you go looking for a certain book or do you just pick up whatever looks good? - I do both! There are some times that I go because there are some books (new and old) that I have on my list to pick up but then I have no control of my life and I always find other books I want to pick up just by looking around.

5) Do you just check out books or more? - It depends on which library I go to but most of the time I check out books, movies/tv shows and cds. Sarah sometimes checks out video games too.

6) What section do you get the most books in? - Most of my books come from YA but I do check out and get books from almost every section; Ya, Adult, Childrens and Nonfiction.

7) Whats your favorite part of the library? - The library is the most amazing thing in my life. I believe the best part of the library is something so simple as the library app because I love being able to see what I have out, being able to renew whenever I want to and have things on hold! It can make somethings really simple!

I loved this tag because the library is so special to me!! I would love to hear your answers so comment, share and like this post and the video once it gets on my channel!

Book Review: Girl Online

Book Review:

Girl Online
By: Zoe Sugg

General Info:

Title: Girl Online
Author: Zoe Sugg
Copyright Date: 2014
Genre:  YA Contemporary
Pages: 344
Price: $17.99
ISBN:  9781476797458

Synopsis: "Penny has a secret. Under the alias Girl Online, Penny blogs her hidden feelings about friendship, boys, high school drama, her quirky family, and the panic attacks that  have begun to take over her life. Wen things go from bad to worse at school, her parents accept an opportunity to whisk the family away for Christmas at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City. There, Penny meets Noah, a gorgeous, guitar-strumming American. Suddenly she is falling in love - and capturing every moment she spends with 'Brooklyn Boy' on her blog. But Noah has a secret, too, one that threatens to ruin Penny's cover - and her closest friendship - forever."

Cover: The cover is very flirty and girly! If you know anything about Zoe Sugg then you would know the look of this book is so like her! The colors really make the book pop off the shelf. I also love the polka dots on the inside covers - its like a hidden surprise. While watching Zoella's YouTube videos you can tell she's very bubbly and hyper; that's basically what her book looks like. The actual hardback cover is just black with the title in silver on the spine - nothing special.

Theme: Much of this book is love or gossip so you would think that there is not really an underlying theme but there is. This book portrays that you should have faith in the person you love. If there is something wrong or something gets said; go to the person/s that said them instead of just going behind  their back.

Point of view: The narration is as the main character Penny. It's kind of like her journal. Zoella has also added some of Penny's blogs throughout the book.

Intended Audience: It's YA contemporary so it is intended towards young girls to maybe mid 20's girls.

Author Style: There is nothing special about the writing in this book other than the blogs put throughout the book. Some of the writing was written as if you already knew things that are popular now. Like I said it's for young and teen girls because it's written for this upcoming generation.
Characters: The main character is Penny; she is your typical teen girl that has lots of drama in her life. It seems like every time she turned around something else was there to disrupt her life. I liked her because she was extremely relatable even though it seemed like she was not really thought out. None of the characters really developed - it was more about the drama than who the characters were.

Plot: Like I said before the characters were not really thought out so the plot had to make up for that. There was a lot going on. It seemed very relatable though. In a normal high school kids life there is drama around every corner and that's how it was in this book. Every time Penny paused or turned around it was something different. It seemed as if I was reading someone's journal. The plot did flow very well and nothing stuck out as being in the wrong place.

Setting: The setting was in two places. Penny was from the UK and then she goes to New York City.

My Opinion: I have many different feelings about this book. I love Zoella and her videos, which made me really want to pick this book up but it really irked me that she didn't  write the book herself. I did really enjoy this book! I love drama and reading about other peoples lives, which is what this book is. I thought it was going to be something totally different but I was pleasantly surprised. I was not so into it that I couldn't put it down but I did have a few moments that were so interesting I had to read it through.
It seems like I am bashing this book because the characters were not thought out, the plot was lacking and it was somewhat dull but I'm not. It was not the most interesting page turner but if you like love stories and drama than this is the book for you!

Score: Image result for 4 out of 5 stars
